New to racing?

Words you will meet on every race calendar, in plain language.

  • Club race

Racing run by a sailing club, often on a weekday evening or over a weekend. Mostly for the club's own members and sailors nearby, and usually more informal than a regatta.

  • Regatta

A racing event over one or more days with several races, open to sailors from other clubs. You usually enter in advance, and there is often an entry fee.

  • Championship

A national, Nordic, European or world event, often for one class. Some are open to anyone who meets the class rules, others need qualification. The notice of race says who may enter.

  • Notice of race

The organiser's document with the dates, the classes, how to enter and the rules that apply. Read it before you enter. It is linked from each race page when we have it.

How the badges are set: from the level the organiser or the source gave the event. Club is shown as a club race, regional as a regatta, and national, Nordic, European and world as championship level.
